Choosing The Right Breed of Dog For Your Family.

When people look for a new dog to welcome into their family, they tend to choose a dog based on looks. It is important to do research before deciding on your new canine family member.

Before welcoming your next dog, take time to research the breed to determine if that cute dog you saw posted online will be a good fit for your lifestyle. Consider the size of the full-grown dog, activity level, grooming needs, personality and level of adaptability.

When my family chooses a new dog, we look for dogs with very short fur and dogs over one year old. Our lifestyle is too busy to bring a young puppy into our home. We also tend to foster before adopting to ensure the personality is a good fit.

Three years ago we adopted Violet, a Rat Terrier-Jack Russell Mix, because of her calm nature and desire to be with people. We were not really seeking another dog. We fostered her in order to prevent unnecessary euthanasia by a shelter down south that was full. We fully intended to find her a family.

I was also creating my dog-safety program and felt her personality would be the perfect fit for working with children. More importantly, my blind pitbull – who was normally stressed with other dogs in the home – loved her. It did not take long to decide that she was the perfect addition to our family.

Violet attends dog-safety programs with me at schools, libraries, scouting events and nursery schools. We have also begun therapy dog work. Although Violet is four years old now, she is rocking her service dog training.

The activities I chose for Violet are a great fit for her personality and we enjoy spending time together each day while working. Now, I want you to find the perfect dog for your family.

In the following video we answer this question by providing tips for picking the breed that best fits your lifestyle.
